Frequently Asked Questions
- Is there a cost to be in a Learning Community?
No, there is no fee for Learning Communities.
- Which FLC (First-Year Learning Community) can I join?
- It depends...
- If you are in the College of Criminal Justice or are hoping to go to either medical school or nursing school, you can choose a Living Learning Community.
- If you want to live with others who share your interests or major, you can join a Living Community.
- If you want to make a smooth transition to college life, join our Bearkat Learning Community.
- How do I get accepted to a Living Learning Community?
You need to be accepted by your academic advisor, so be sure to make an appointment with an academic advisor at the SAM Center. Let them know which Living Learning Community you are interested in. Advising for Fall begins in early February.
- How do I get a spot in a Living Community?
Spots in a Living Community are assigned by major. When choosing a bed in a residence hall, you should be able to 鈥渟ee鈥 Living Community beds if they are available. There are a very limited number of Living Community beds.
- How do I enroll in a Bearkat Learning Community?
First, talk with your academic advisor and let them know you are interested in registering for UNIV 1101. Then, be sure to add any Monday/Wednesday 2:00pm section of UNIV 1101 to your schedule.
- I am a CJ major and want to be in the CJ Living Learning Community, but I only want to take two of the assigned classes. Can I do that?
The Living Learning Communities have a block schedule, so students must enroll in ALL of the assigned classes. Your academic advisor can let you know if the block works for you or not.
- I have already joined a Living Community. Can I still be in the Bearkat Learning Community?
Yes! Any incoming student can join the Bearkat Learning Community. Just let your academic advisor know you want to be part of BLC, and be sure to add a section of UNIV 1101 that meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 2:00pm to your schedule.
- I am a pre-nursing student. I have already added all my classes and picked my residence hall. Can I still join a Living Learning Community?
Yes! If there is space, please contact our office so we can get in touch with your academic advisor to see if the Pre-Nursing Living Learning Community is right for you.
- I am an incoming freshman and I want to be part of a First-Year Learning Community, but I am not sure which one is right for me. What should I do?
Please reach out to the First-Year Experience Office; we can help you decide! Email us at fye@shsu.edu. We can even set up an appointment with one of our Peer Mentors who can help guide you through the process of becoming a new Bearkat!
- I am an incoming freshman and I want to be part of a First-Year Learning Community, but I am not sure which one is right for me. What should I do?
Students may consult their academic advisor at the SAM Center for information on themed sections of UNIV1101: Learning Frameworks or register for the UNIV 1101: Learning Frameworks designated for Criminal Justice.
Students must consult Residence Life for access to themed Residence Hall rooms.
