Counseling Center


The Counseling Center offers group therapy, couples therapy, one on one brief therapy and referral services to students who are currently enrolled. Services are available both in-person and virtually.

Behavioral Intervention


If a student suffers from serious emotional disturbances and/or mental health concerns, submit a . (Non-Emergency, Non-Safety Related)

Definition: What is considered “serious emotional disturbances and/or mental health concerns”?

  • Individual engages in suicidal talk or self-harm.
  • Individual makes vague threats to harm others that might be for a direct or indirect target.
  • Behavior is increasingly disruptive and involves multiple office such as student conduct, law enforcement, and counseling.
  • Moderate risk of substance dependence.
  • Student self admits for mental health care.

Action: Submit a .

This form is for non-emergency and non-safety related concerns and will only be received during normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CT) and may take up to 72 hours for review. 

The Behavioral Intervention Tean (BIT) team will provide guidance, referrals, counseling, and other types of support necessary for a student in crisis while paying special attention to the safety and security needs of community members. This referral program is for current students and a report can be submitted by a student, faculty, staff, or parent.

The Helping Kats COPE Workshop Series provides helpful tips for helping you cope with everyday life. These workshops help you learn how to address many life challenges and develop coping skills. Topics include stress management, digital mindfulness, grief and loss, suicide prevention, healthy relationships, overcoming test anxiety and more. Helpline


Helpline. We Listen. (936) 294-4111
The Helpline is an after-hours mental health service offered by the SHSU Counseling Center. The Helpline has trained volunteers available to help you talk through many life concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, a breakup, loneliness, academic concerns, and more. The Helpline is available to students and the community, and it is a free resource. The Helpline operates on Monday-Thursday from 4-9 pm during the fall and spring semester and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4-7 pm during the summer semesters. Trained volunteers are available to offer a listening ear and support as well as provide campus resources and community crisis resources in a confidential and nonjudgmental way.


Let鈥檚 Talk is a free, virtual, informal, confidential consultation service. It is a space where you can get feedback related to mental health concerns, create solution-focused plans toward solving life dilemmas, develop strategies on how to support a friend or family member and get linked with referral resources. TimelyCare


TimelyCare is a 24/7 free virtual mental health service that offers telehealth counseling sessions, health coaching, self-care content, on-demand emotional support, and psychiatry. To access psychiatry services, you must get a referral from the Counseling Center. Visit or download the TimelyCare app from your app store and register with your school email address. You can then access services from any web-enabled device 鈥 smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop.

Jack Staggs Counseling Clinic


The Jack Staggs Counseling Clinic offers free individual counseling for SHSU Students. The Clinic is operated by the SHSU Department of Counselor Education and counseling services are provided by supervised graduate level students. Services are available on a weekly basis for up to 15 weeks with appointment times varying per semester. No medication or mental health crisis services offered.

Call 936.294.1121 to schedule an appointment at Huntsville office or call 936.202.5012 to schedule an appointment at Conroe/Woodlands office. All Clinic voicemails are confidential.

Crisis Intervention


In a mental health crisis, you can call or visit the Counseling Center to speak with a clinician without an appointment Monday-Friday between 8 am-5 pm. Seek help immediately if you have thoughts of suicide, thoughts of harming yourself or others, or if your symptoms become severe.

Student Health Center (SHC)


Stay healthy with help from the Student Health Center. The Student Health Center offers many services including Medical Appointments; Laboratory Services; and Pharmacy (Prescription and Over the Counter).

We engage Bearkats in their personal health and wellness. We share your goals of keeping you healthy and support your academic success. Students can schedule their appointments at the Student Health Center through the patient portal or can call with questions at (936) 294-1805.

Student Wellness


The SHSU Student Wellness office is the component of the Student Health Center that proactively educates the SHSU community about health and well-being. At Student Wellness, we strive to ensure that student wellness does not get in the way of academic success. Furthermore, we believe that you need to 鈥淏e Well鈥 in order to 鈥淒o Well鈥 during your college years and beyond.

Student Wellness offers proactive learning and peer education across the 8 Dimensions of Wellness: Spiritual, Intellectual, Emotional, Physical, Social, Occupational, Financial, and Environmental.

Our PHA team of peer educators is out on the plaza weekly to interact and educate on a large variety of health topics relevant to college students.
